Who Have You Equipped Today?

So today is yet another day…oh yeah I now remember what I wanted to blog about.

Equipping was a word Dr J. Maxwell taught me in his book, The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You.

I didn’t realize the different meaning of the word until he explained it to me.

I won’t be able to re-explain it exactly the way he did, but I’ll try.

Maxwell wrote about how he taught the staff, at his favorite restaurant, how he would like to be served.

It made sense.

I mean, if you value my business, as a patron, then you need to serve me the way I like. So that I can keep me as a customer.

How he would like to be treated from the moment he enters the restaurant, how things should be laid out for him during his stay, all the way up until he leaves.

Maxwell equipped them on how they can better keep him as a customer.

It’s a win-win situation, like Dr. S. Covey described in The 7 Steps to Highly Effective People.

Maxwell has a pleasant experience being services and they get to keep this internationally influential customer under their belt.

I decided to try this “equipping” idea on a colleague.

Integrity is one of my highest values, so when I loan you money and you say you will pay me back tomorrow, only for you to come up with a story when tomorrow comes, it violates one of my highest values.

It’s an insult to me.

And I don’t like to be disrespected.

Respect being another of my other top values.

So I gave it a shot.

My colleague asked for money from me again, and said he will pay me back at theend of our shift.

The time came when the reimbursement was due, and like a creature of habit, he asked if he can pay me tomorrow.

I replied that I could wait for tomorrow.

It caught him by surprise, usually I just say yes and allow people like him to walk all over me.

I didn’t feel like being a doormat that day.

I asked if I heard him right when he said he was going to pay me back at the end of our shift.

He said he did. I then asked what happened.

An question he couldn’t answer.

He proceeded gearing his mind and actions towards paying me back, like he said.

The way he threw the money back in my hands, was not with the same grace I loaned him with.

Which was fine, because it sets up one for two possible future scenarios:

  1. Next time he feels the need to request something from me, he just won’t.
  2. Next time he feels the need to request something from me, he knows he would need to deliver on time.

He has been equipped.

He might try me a few more times so he can try his luck.

I would then need to be consistent with my equipping him.

It puts me in a place of power and control. I hate being reactive.

There’s No Exit Strategy

For the longest of time I’ve been dreaming of an exit strategy.

As in, I will reach a certain point in my life where I will sit back and relax.

Doing nothing that will make me reach a higher level of living.

Where I would be satisfied with my lot.

Where I would have “peace.”

But that bubble was burst when John Maxwell said something in an interview he did with Ed Mylett.

It’s one of the things I fight about with my wife to be.

I’m not proud of it.

She always sees us progressing and wanting more for the family.

I’m of the belief that we should live below our means, and expand our means.

But this is a form of procrastination she feels.

Standing still defies nature.

Nature is always moving, growing, developing and changing.

The peace I’m referring to can only be achieved through death.

And even then my body will decay and rot until I’m all clothes and bones.

There is no threshold that I would reach.

Were I could hold on to my success for the rest of my life.

Life won’t allow me to because things are forever changing.

Nothing stays the same.

I always pride myself for going with the trend of universal laws.

But I now realize that I’ve been sabotaging myself.

Shooting myself in the foot.

Life has been challenging lately because I’ve been going against “the flow.”

There’s fun to be had in progress.

There’s fun to be had in process.

I need to remember that.

And to apologize to the wife.

I’m sorry.

Please forgive me.

F*** Your Weaknesses, Focus On Your Strengths

Lessons it will keep on teaching until they are learnt.

Sometimes these lessons come in the form of painful experiences.

These painful experiences keep repeating themselves in the form of problems.

Once you solve them then you’re on to the next.

A life of problems.

A life of challenges that need to be overcome.

So in actuality one can’t really be comfortable.

Because living a successful life you would need to be overcoming challenges that brings you closer to the things you want.

Taking breaks are a must but procrastinating won’t get you much.

More of the same really.

Spending the majority of my day, doing something that does not inspire me, only to get paid just enough to meet my monthly expenses…

No wonder they call it a dead-end job.

There something that John Maxwell wrote about not working on your weaknesses.

Referring to your skill set.

I was like, “What??”

I love the way he broke it down for me.

Your strengths make you unique. They make you, YOU.

All that other garbage needs to be left in the wind…Ohk I am paraphrasing.

What I am getting at is: spend the most of your days doing things that you love.

Life is too short to be doing things you hate.

Escaping the jail of your 9-5, to do what you love, needs work.

Something to do alongside your work.

Your side hustle.

Your side hustle is your get-out-of-jail-free card.

But that’s a blog for another day.

You need to love your life’s work, I’m just saying.

You Fear the Sabre-tooth

6753809I read somewhere that the brain is wired since the stone age to think negatively so to protect us from the dangers that existed then.

Sabre-tooth as an example.

These days this negative thinking works overtime, stopping us from getting ahead in life.

Because we fear trying something new.

Fear of the Sabre-tooth.

This happens without us even realizing.

Without reading, preferably instructional books, then nothing will contradict that thinking.

You could even try swapping listening to the car radio station or your phone playlist for an audiobook.

The hours you spent while traveling, could be spent sharpening your mind against the Sabre-tooth.

Maybe that’s what you need.

Maybe that’s what need.

A different outlook.

That comes from developing a habit of reading or listening daily to go sh*t.

Replace Your S** t Habits With Good Ones

I kept on seeing and hearing the name Simon Sinek being projected in my head.

Simon Sinek.

As if stuck in the frontal lobe of my brain.

Simon Sinek.

All this, haunting, while trying to sleep.

So here I am, writing about him.

I don’t know much about him.

He was first brought to my attention by a business partner who has a background in medicine.

Google Sinek.

From the little I know of him is that he’s a speaker.

He speaks about most about leadership. On what defines a leader and what drives her. Reasons why they are true leaders. Amongst other things.

He’s available on different social media sites, I also follow him on Twitter and IG.

He’s an author as well, he wrote Start With Why.

And there are lots of videos on the ‘Tube that have he’s talks.

I think there’s a vid of one of his talks I posted in one of my blogs that I thought was awesome.

There’s a bias that comes with being a leader that I want to take advantage of.

The monetary benefits of being paid to solve problems being one of them.

It’s as if followers create problems while leaders get paid to solve them.

So I’ve been listening to some of his audios as well. Him, John Maxwell and Gary Vaynerchuk are the 3 guys I’ve been filling my head with of late.

And Eric Thomas. #TGIM

I guess I can be obsessed with certain things in my life, such as my personal development.

If I don’t invest the time for it, noone else will.

Then I will just be like the rest of them, blaming my job or spouse or community or the government or the gods for my current, undesirable situations.

Not realising that the true problem here is me.

I fix me, all else gets fixed.

It’s an inside job.

You Are What You Accept

Either by acceptance of what they do to you or by you reprimanding them.

To correct someone on how you would like to be treated, I believe, comes from raising your standards.

Low standards allows them to continue “taking advantage” of you, while raising them educates them on how you would like to be treated.

It takes courage to put yourself first.

It takes courage futhi to “equip” people on how you like to be treated, in order for them to bring out the best in you.

It’s a win-win.

Reminds me of how I cringe when people organize events at the last minute and expect me to participate.

9 times out of 10 I don’t. If I do, it is with a closed heart.

Give me time to think it over in my mind as a typical melancholy. Don’t pull a sanguine move on me and expect to me to be jolly about it.

But then again I’m an introvert, so being “out there” drains my energy, at times.

I’m just at a point in my life, with all that’s happening, where I cannot “go with the flow” that goes against my core values.

Living a lie is tiring.

There is power outside your comfort zone.

“Your Attitude…Will Determine Your Altitude.”

Talk about duplicating poor performance.

If you have people that follow you, they are sure to duplicate what you do…

…less what you say.

Just thinking nje from what I’ve observed with my team at work of late.

Original team leader is currently not available, so he left the team in the hands of the stand in team leader. A new member who just recently joined the team.

But stand in is not as thorough as the “original” team leader.

Stand in team leader is now on sick leave, leaving second in charge to attend to team queries.

2IC is also dropping the ball when it comes to taking care of those in his charge.

I fail to understand why he is duplicating the efforts of the lazy leader instead of the action-oriented leader, who manages to keep this team on the straight and narrow month in and month out.

Now the team is despondent.

Having to rely on other team leaders, some leaders not as willing to serve as you might expect, for management level queries.

With the customer obviously taking the hit due to a lack of teamwork.

Broken systems bleeds an organization out of money due to poor customer service.

And I think when you shortcut your responsibilities, you shortcut your success in other area of your life as well.

Because the same attitude you have in one area of your life, will affect other areas also.

And your attitude determines your level of success.

You need to be consistent in all areas of your life, that way it won’t feel like a tag of war when it comes to wanting to achieve your goals. One step forward but taking 2 steps back kinda thing.

A very uncomfortable thing to strive for, especially on a daily basis.

But that’s the thing.

Success is found outside your comfort zone.

And a day spent being comfortable, is a day spent being lazy.

It’s a day spent growing backwards.
